At Work.

I find myself in all kinds of places and poses when I pray. Granted, usually, it’s sitting comfortably on my bed propped up by full pillows or swaying gently in the rocking chair my parents gifted us when our first child was born. Occasionally, though, prayer looks a bit different!

One of the most moving experiences I have had in the last couple of years involved me lying on the bedroom floor….asking God some tough questions. Tears rolled haphazardly into my ears as I poured out my heart. I recited a litany of anguish on behalf of others in my relational world. The list covered terminal diagnoses, mental illness, broken relationships... So much pain. Just so much pain.

As I dared to approach the throne with my agonizing inquiries, I was struck with a phrase.

I AM AT WORK.

Um...pardon?

I AM AT WORK.

Well, this was NOT what I was looking for.

It was not an explanation I could wrap in a tidy package of my own understanding.

This was not a glimpse of relief right around the bend.

I received something else: reassurance.

I am simply not designed to comprehend God’s ways, but He comforts me with the reminder that He is involved in every joy, in every heartbreak. I may not see it, the people living the experience first hand may not even see it at first blush, but He is there, working away behind the scenes. He sees all, He knows each heart intimately, and He is Wisdom itself. The God of the universe is at work for each of us, all….the...time!

Months later, I heard the song “Look Up Child” by Lauren Daigle.

I resonated with the lyrics so strongly. It seems that she, too, asked God some tough questions, but rather than “I am at work”, her answer is “Look up, child”. I hope you will give it a listen.
