Might I Have a Word?

I believe in the power of words. They can affirm or repress. They can encourage or unnerve. Words are important.

What about just one word?

A couple of years ago, in his message near the beginning of a new year, a pastor spoke to us about one word. What word, you ask? Well, that totally depends on whom you ask! He provided time, extended silence in the middle of his sermon, for us to settle into the Presence and ask for one word to guide us in the coming year. Now, I know that it has been a trend in society in general to choose a word as a key focus for the coming year, but to ask God for it puts a whole different spin on it. It becomes an act of faith, a relational inspiration, a small piece of God’s plan. I was surprised how quickly a word came to me and I sat with it for days. I looked up the definition in the dictionary, I searched for Biblical references that included the word and laid out some ideas about what it would look like to make it MY word for the year.

Twelve months later, I did the same activity on my own. This time, I made several requests for a word and it was not the first word that came to mind that stuck. There were a few words and I took time to prayerfully explore each one before choosing.

This January, I encourage you to find a quiet spot, still your heart and simply ask the Lord for YOUR word for 2022. Ask with expectation and excitement and then…wait. If it takes a few tries, so be it! It will be worth it to have a God-ordained word of your own to ground and instruct you moving forward.

A New Year's blessing for you:

May you encounter God’s sweet and intimate presence in fresh and inspiring ways.

God bless.
