Window Shopping

When studying French at university, I came across what quickly became one of my favourite expressions:  lécher les vitrines.  Literally translated, it is “licking the windows”, but it actually means window shopping.  Kind of gives a new meaning to drooling over something you want to buy!

Many years later, we found ourselves in NYC during the international soccer finals.  The evening of the deciding match, we were strolling through Time Square and noticed people lining the windows of any establishment that was airing the game.  The restaurants and bars were full, so many folks watched from outside.

It seems to me that many people are window shopping a relationship with Jesus.  They hear about Him, perhaps discuss faith with Christ-follower ́friends.  They kick the tires, not sure if they really want to commit to the deal.  They have questions (who doesn’t?!) and sometimes those same friends or others can make choices that don’t seem to align with their claims.  It can be confusing.  Some folks stay on the outside looking in for years and never quite cross the threshold.

Psalm 34:8 says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.

“Door dash” aside, it’s pretty hard to taste what’s on the menu from the street side of the window!

If you are someone who has been on the outside looking in,

desiring something more for your life,

needing to belong,

seeking direction,

reaching for hope…

…may I encourage you today to take a step inside?  No more licking the flavourless windows!  Taste for yourself the richness that is waiting for you.
